Telelogic Systems Architect Adds HP CMDB Support PDF  | Print |  E-mail

Telelogic AB’s latest release of System Architect, its enterprise architecture (EA) tool, has added support for HP’s (formerly Mercury’s) Universal Configuration Management Database (CMDB) that is part of its governance and service management offerings.

That's one of the new features of version 10.6 of System Architect, which also adds the ability to expose access to its own repository through web services, support of the U.K. Ministry of Defense’s Architectural Framework (MODAF), and a new Japanese language version.

The obvious highlight is the integration with HP. For now, it is an import/export process, where each can package files through an adapter and get captured and visualized by the other. At this point, it is not native access from within the System Architect product per se.

But what it does is formalize the feedback loop between EA and change configuration management. That provides a tie-in for enterprise architects who conduct high level modeling and planning to align IT systems with business processes through UML and data modeling, with the elements that execute the processes at the infrastructure level.

Admittedly, making the jump will likely prove a bit of a challenge, as you are dealing with two different constituencies: enterprise architects and IT infrastructure and service managers. It’s a more challenging jump than between System Architect and Doors, Telelogic’s requirements management tool, which have had links predating the time when Popkin Systems (which originally developed system Architect) was acquired by Telelogic two years ago.

At least in that instance, there is a closer tie between EA and the software development lifecycle. Extending that to service delivery is one of those areas that make sense logically, if you take ITIL seriously enough to try aligning IT service delivery closer to the business.

Telelogic System Architect 10.6 is available now.
