With the release of version 7.1 of its change detection system that focuses at the OS level, Tripwire is delivering the first pieces of support for VMware that it promised last fall. In the new release, Tripwire can detect changes in virtual server containers that might conflict with VMWare’s hardening policies.

Initially, the change configurator detector for VMware will be made available free for a single server, with a version that supports multiple VMware servers to be release in June.

Other new features coming in the 7.1 release include the ability to capture and replicate “golden policies.” This builds on a policy management capability that was introduced last fall in 7.0; with the new release, you can now compare configurations against the policies that you have entered, and if policies have not been formally recorded, the system can reverse engineer policies based on machine configurations that you designate as golden.
Also, a new remediation advisor adds to alarm reports of policy failures with suggestions on how to do the fix. The remediation are based on guidelines listed on Microsoft’s implementation of Common Internet Security (CIS) policies website.

Rounding out the new release are policy waiver capabilities, where you can enter exceptions, and test notifications where failures are rated by severity (in order to reduce nuisance alarms).
